Soil Improvement

Soil pH Chart | Soil Testing | Soil Improvement | Soil Conditioners

Manure is the best organic source to condition any soil. It should be used as the main soil conditioner (along with compost) and nutrient booster. Most manures can be used very gererously and full strength, however some manures contain a high nitrogen content and must be used cautiously.

Most bought manure will have a high percentage of hormones, pesticides and other chemicals. By stacking the manure for at least a year the chemicals will have minimal effect on the soil and crops. Some of the nutrients will be lost, but because it can be used in high quantities it is not a problem.

Digging in Manure
the most effective way to incorporate manure into the soil is to 'dig' it in in the fall. Use at least two 2 gallon buckets for every square yard/meter. Start by digging a trench. Put a layer of manure at the bottom of the first trench. Now dig another trench, filling the first halfway with the soil from the second trench. Add more manure, then fill the trench with soil.
